würden + Infinitive
 

EXPRESSING POSSIBILITY:

 

The construction würden + Infinitive is a form of subjunctive:
it expresses a possibility,  what you would do if you were in a particular situation.

         Was würdest du mit 1 Millionen Dollar machen?                    Ich würde nach Europa reisen.

         Würdest du eine lange Reise machen?
            Würdest du ein Auto kaufen?
 

WÜRDEN is the subjunctive form of the verb WERDEN:
the form is constructed from the Simple Past (Präteritum) form of the verb "werden" with an umlaut added:

er / sie / es  würde
sie würden
   

 

The structure is the same as you have seen with:

        Conjugated Verb (Würden)     +  Infinitive

        Ich würde nach Rio fahren.

Er würde gern nach Atlanta fliegen.


 

Following a dependent conjunction [daß, wenn, weil, ob, als], the conjugated verb follows the infinitive:

Ich sagte, daß ich nach Rio fahren würde.

Sie fragte ihn, ob er gern nach Atlanta fliegen würde.
