                                     Modell:      Die Katze ist so groß wie der Hund.
                                                       Das Wohnzimmer ist so groß wie die Küche.

* Comparisons of Superiority and Inferiority

 All comparatives in German are formed:

        adjective + er  ==>  intelligenter
          adverb + er      ==>  schneller
 

         Adjectives that end in -el   or -er drop the e in the comparative:

                                 dunkel  ==> dunkler
                                 teuer  ==> teurer
 
 

                            use:   Comparative + als (than)

                                 Modell:  Was fährt langsamer, ein Auto oder ein Fahrrad?

                                               Ein Fahrrad fährt langsamer als ein Auto.
 
 
 
 

Irregular forms of the Comparative
 

Some one-syllable adjectives and adverbs with stem vowel:  a, o, u
 add an Umlaut in the comparative:

                         alt    ==> älter                                     groß  ==> größer
                         kalt   ==> kälter                                  oft  ==> öfter
                         lang   ==>  länger
                         stark  ==> stärker                               dumm ==> dümmer
                         warm  ==> wärmer                            jung  ==>  jünger
                                                                                    kurz  ==> kürzer
 

 Some German adjectives and adverbs have irregular comparatives:

                         gut   ==>  besser                 Sie spricht besser Deutsch als Französisch.
                         gern   ==>  lieber                Er liest lieber Horrorgeschichten als Liebesgeschichten.
                         viel   ==>  mehr                  Sie haben mehr Katzen als Hunde.
                         hoch   ==>  höher               Boulder liegt höher als Charleston.
                         nah   ==>  näher                  Mt. Pleasant liegt näher als Atlanta.
